Right here in Mobara, stories whisper from the ground. Mobara, a city in Chiba Prefecture, holds more than meets the eye. It is a place where ancient history dances with modern life.

Mobara boasts a population of over 88,000 people. The city covers almost 100 square kilometers. Imagine Mobara nestled inland on the Bōsō Peninsula. It sits a comfortable distance from both Chiba and Tokyo.

Mobara’s story stretches back through time. Archaeological sites reveal Jōmon and Yayoi period settlements. Kofun burial mounds dot the landscape. They whisper tales of early inhabitants. During the Heian period, Mobara hosted important shōden estates. The Tokugawa clan conducted a land survey in 1591. This marked a significant moment in Mobara’s history.

The town of Mobara officially formed in 1889. This happened during the Meiji period. Transportation changed when the Bōsō Tetsudo, now the JR Sotobō Line, arrived in 1897. Mobara Station connected the city to a wider world. A handcar system even linked Mobara Station to Chōnan in 1909.

World War II left its mark on Mobara. The Imperial Japanese Navy established an air base here. Residences and farmland vanished to make way for it. Forced labor built Mobara Airfield. Kamikaze units flew from this airfield to attack American forces. After the war, the United States briefly occupied the airfield.

Post-war Mobara saw significant changes. Plans to reoccupy the air base were abandoned. Instead, Mobara Middle School was built on the site. Mobara Town grew by annexing neighboring villages in 1952. It achieved city status that same year. More expansion occurred in 1955 and 1972. Nature’s fury struck in 1990 when a tornado caused widespread damage.

Mobara today is a regional commerce center. Electronics manufacturing thrives here. Futaba Corporation calls Mobara home. Natural gas production is also a key industry. Chemical production is significant. Mobara produces 40% of the world’s iodine. Agriculture remains important. Welsh onions are a specialty crop here.

The Tanabata festival is a highlight of Mobara’s calendar. This event fills the city with stalls and parades each July. Mobara cherishes its connection with Salisbury, South Australia. The two cities have been sister cities since 2002.

Mobara Park offers a picturesque escape. This park is known as one of Japan’s top 100 places for cherry blossom viewing. It has about 2,850 cherry trees. Vermillion bridges span a central pond in the park. A shrine to Benten, the goddess of health, stands peacefully.
