“A faucet? A giant, gleaming faucet?” you might ask, standing here before Issey Miyake Semba. Yes, a faucet. It’s not what you’d expect from a fashion flagship, but then again, Issey Miyake was never one for the expected. Issey Miyake Semba isn’t just a store; it’s a creative wellspring, a testament to Miyake’s innovative spirit. Located in the heart of Osaka, this 828 square meter space brings all eight Issey Miyake lines under one roof for the first time in western Japan. It’s also the largest Issey Miyake store worldwide. The building itself is a marvel, designed by Osaka native Shingo Noma. Noma, a former designer for Pleats Please Issey Miyake, drew inspiration from Semba’s history as a bustling port city, incorporating water motifs throughout the store. The massive silver faucet at the entrance isn’t just a whimsical touch; it symbolizes the constant flow of creativity that defines the brand. “If you turn on the faucet,” Noma explains, “there will always be a gushing flow of interesting ideas.” That concept extends to the store’s central feature: a colossal stainless-steel column and desk designed to resemble a giant plug. This impressive structure, with a central ring weighing 350kg, was crafted by local artisans, showcasing Japanese craftsmanship at its finest. Even seemingly minor details, like the water-pipe legs of tables and clothing racks, are meticulously polished, reflecting the same level of care as a fine piece of jewelry. The soap-shaped seats are another example of Noma’s meticulous attention to detail. He researched over two dozen local soap varieties to find the perfect form, ensuring a comfortable and effortless experience for shoppers. Beyond the retail space, Issey Miyake Semba houses a dedicated gallery space. For the store’s opening, renowned Japanese illustrator and Osaka native, Seitaro Kuroda, created an “open studio” exhibition. Kuroda, a long-time acquaintance of Issey Miyake, shares a connection to the water theme, a self-proclaimed ship-watcher whose art often features boats and vessels, further cementing the store’s connection to Osaka’s maritime heritage. Issey Miyake Semba is more than just a store; it’s an immersive experience, a fusion of fashion, art, and local craftsmanship. The playful water motifs, the raw concrete structure, and the meticulously crafted details all contribute to a unique atmosphere that honors the brand’s innovative spirit.
