Have you ever felt the pulse of a city? Right here beneath your feet lies the Mittelpunkt der Stadt Flensburg a point of historical significance. This unassuming bronze and Vanga granite plate marks the historical center of Flensburg. It’s not the geographical center mind you that shifts constantly. Nor is it the political center now located at the current town hall. No this plate signifies the heart of Flensburg as it was in the late Middle Ages.
Imagine the bustling Thingplatz the open-air meeting place. For centuries Flensburg citizens gathered here. They discussed town matters. They heard pronouncements of law. This was before the town hall was even built. The Thingplatz was carefully chosen. It sat between the Southern and Northern markets. It was equidistant ensuring fairness among all neighborhoods. The location was central to the then small city. This makes the Mittelpunkt der Stadt Flensburg a powerful symbol.
The Thingplatz extended near present-day Große Straße number one. This was the site of the old town hall before it was built in 1445. The area also included the city’s theater which came much later. The Thingplatz was bounded by the Rutebek a stream that flowed down the slope. The modern Rathausstraße didn’t exist back then. It was built much later. The Thingplatz’s full size required the loudest constant shouting for the speaker to be heard.
In 1443 as Flensburg’s population boomed past 3000 the town hall was finally constructed. Part of the Thingplatz was used for this construction. The remainder continued as a gathering place. The old town hall remained until 1883. It was then replaced with a larger town hall in a different location. The old town hall’s site was rebuilt. The current town hall is far from the Mittelpunkt der Stadt Flensburg.
Marianne Schreckenberger had the inspiring idea for the Mittelpunkt der Stadt Flensburg. It was created by Dietmar Gördes in 1989. The design is simple yet effective. It quietly reminds us of Flensburg’s rich history. The plate serves as a connection to the past. Stand here and let the spirit of the Thingplatz fill you. Feel the weight of centuries beneath your feet. You are standing at the heart of Flensburg’s enduring story.
