Beneath the California sun stands Mission Valley Community Chapel. It is a beacon of faith in San Diego. Founded in 1952, this chapel has a rich history. It started with a vision and grew into a community cornerstone.
The story of Mission Valley Community Chapel begins in the aftermath of World War II. James Mader, a saved U.S. Army Air Corp veteran, felt a calling. After training, he arrived in San Diego in 1950. He served as Assistant Director of the Christian Servicemen’s Center. His desire was to fully dedicate himself to the Lord’s work.
Ralph Barker, a board member of the Christian Businessmen’s Committee, played a vital role. He invited James Mader to preach to adults. This marked the beginning of what would become Mission Valley Community Chapel.
In the early 1950s, Ralph Barker replaced a barracks with a submarine trainer. After remodeling, it became the chapel’s home. James Mader taught Bible classes in homes. As the population grew, so did the need for a church. The assembly incorporated in 1953 as Mission Valley Community Chapel.
Allied Gardens provided affordable housing for veterans after the war. A woman from the church visited families there. Many of them joined the assembly. In 1954, the church bought a bus to pick up children in Allied Gardens. The bus also served as a Sunday School room.
Clyde and Kenneth Hammond, brothers of Karl Hammond, were early leaders. Doug Thomson from New Zealand was also heavily involved. These individuals helped shape the church’s early years.
Mission Valley Community Chapel has always valued youth programs. In the 1990s, prayer and missions became a focus. The church sent missionaries to countries in Africa and Indonesia. They also supported missions in the Philippines, Paraguay, and France.
Today, Mission Valley Community Chapel continues its mission. It exalts Christ and equips the saints. The chapel reaches out to those who are lost. The church is an Open Plymouth Brethren assembly. It is an Evangelical Christian church.
The chapel offers several services. Sunday includes Lord’s Supper, Sunday School, and a worship service. There is also a Sunday evening service. A Wednesday prayer time is available. The leadership is volunteer-based. This allows the majority of giving to go to worldwide missions.
