Have you ever wondered how a small chapel built from brush and mud could become an important part of a city’s history? Standing here, at Mission San Juan Capistrano, you are looking at just that. This beautiful mission, named after Saint John of Capistrano, was originally established in 1716 in East Texas. It was moved to its current location in 1731 on the eastern banks of the San Antonio River. For centuries, it served not only as a place of worship but also as a vibrant and self-sustaining community. The mission played a vital role in the lives of the indigenous people living in San Antonio. The mission, a hub of agricultural activity, produced iron tools, cloth, and prepared hides. Gardens provided melons, peaches, and pumpkins. In addition to the mission compound, indigenous mission farmers cultivated maize, peppers, beans, squash, sweet potatoes, and sugar cane in irrigated fields. This ensured the mission’s independence and allowed it to feed its community. While faced with several challenges like diseases, raids, and changes in political power, the mission persevered. By 1762, it housed over 200 Indians and boasted a granary, textile shops, and adobe houses with thatched roofs. It even had an ambitious plan to build a larger church, which, due to a lack of manpower, was unfortunately never completed. But in its incomplete form, the church stands today as a powerful symbol of resilience and dedication. Today, Mission San Juan Capistrano is part of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It offers a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of San Antonio.
