This plaque, erected in 1936, marks the approximate location of the third mission established in the San Antonio area. The Mission San Franscico Xavier de Najera was founded in 1722, at the request of Juan Rodriguez, the chief of the Ervipiame tribe. Rodriguez assured the Spanish that his people were friendly and willing to accept missionaries, but only if they provided them with firearms to defend themselves against the Apache. The mission, however, was short-lived. The Indians refused to settle in large numbers, and without a permanent community, the mission languished and was abandoned just four years later in 1726. While the mission itself may have faded into obscurity, its story, like the inscription on this marker, remains a testament to the ever-changing landscape of Texas and the resilient spirit of its people. Though the mission buildings are gone, the plaque serves as a poignant reminder of this chapter in San Antonio’s history.
