Did you know that Misión Evangélica Bethesda stands as a beacon of faith in Antigua? It is more than just a church. It is a testament to the enduring power of belief.

Let’s delve into the story of Misión Evangélica Bethesda. Its roots trace back to a broader movement of evangelical missions in Guatemala. The Misión Centroamericana was founded in 1890. Dr C.I. Scofield and others sought to establish a strong Christian presence in Central America.

Initially, their focus was drawn to the lack of a significant evangelical presence. They aimed to fill this void. Scofield reached out to various organizations. He urged them to send missionaries to this often-overlooked region. He emphasized Central America’s proximity to the US and Canada. He called it “our little Samaria”.

When these appeals went unanswered, Scofield took matters into his own hands. He met with three church leaders in Dallas. They prayed and decided to found a mission. The goal was to bring the Gospel to Central America. They named it simply “La Misión Centroamericana”.

The mission quickly found its first family of missionaries. The McConnells arrived in Costa Rica in 1891. Three years later, a group including the Dillons and Francisco Penzotti set out on an exploration. Their aim was to understand the region better. Tragedy struck when Mr Wilbur died of yellow fever in Nicaragua. Mrs Dillon died at sea en route to El Salvador. The expansion plans faced a setback.

Despite these challenges, the mission persisted. Work began in Honduras and El Salvador in 1896. H. C. Dillon moved to Guatemala in mid-1896. He remarried and settled in Antigua Guatemala.

Dillon chose Guatemala. The numerous indigenous groups presented a unique challenge. He had spent 18 months exploring. He assessed the spiritual needs of these groups. This journey led him to open a mission in Guatemala.

The Dillons worked tirelessly in Antigua Guatemala. Their reports show their evangelistic zeal. In August 1896, they distributed tracts during a religious procession. They visited homes on opposite sides of the street.

Mrs Dillon even tried to evangelize a Mother Superior. She compared Catholic and evangelical Bibles. Within a month the Dillons had shared the Gospel. They reached Antigua Guatemala and nearby towns.

By October, the missionaries spoke of converts. They reported the first two baptisms. They planned to continue their work in Guatemala. But Mr Dillon died during a visit to Honduras in 1897. His widow stayed with the missionaries in Honduras. The initial effort to establish a field in Guatemala seemed thwarted. Yet the work was God’s. In time, the goal would be reached.

Today Misión Evangélica Bethesda continues this legacy. It serves as a place of worship and community. It stands on Calle del Agua. Its presence enriches the spiritual landscape of Antigua.

As you stand before Misión Evangélica Bethesda consider its history. Reflect on the dedication of those early missionaries. Think about their commitment to spreading their faith. The church embodies the enduring spirit of evangelicalism in Guatemala. It is a living testament to faith and perseverance. It represents a community united in worship and service.
