Gazing at the shimmering surface, can you see the museum reflected in the Mirror Pond? Appropriately named, Mirror Pond sits before the National Museum of Korea. This oval-shaped body of water, with a maximum diameter of 120 meters, acts like a giant mirror. The museum’s facade, with all its architectural grandeur, is perfectly replicated in the pond’s surface. Mirror Pond is more than just a visually stunning feature. It represents a key principle of traditional Korean gardens: the harmonious balance between mountain and water. This design philosophy sought to create miniature, idealized versions of the natural world. Mirror Pond, nestled within the museum’s gardens, embodies this idea. It provides a tranquil oasis amidst the bustling city. The surrounding gardens, including the Mir Waterfall and Mir Bridge, further enhance this sense of a traditional Korean landscape. “Mir,” an old Korean word for dragon, connects the pond to the Yongsan district where the museum stands. The Cheongjajeong, or Celadon Pavilion, graces the Mirror Pond. Built in 2009 to celebrate the centennial of Korea’s first modern museum, its roof boasts replica Goryeo celadon tiles from the 12th century. This adds another layer of historical significance to Mirror Pond. It serves as a beautiful centerpiece, reflecting not just the museum, but also Korea’s rich artistic heritage.
