Did you know that Mirman School started in a home? It’s true. Mirman School in Los Angeles wasn’t always the impressive facility you see before you today. In 1962 Norman and Beverly Mirman opened their doors to nine gifted children. Their home became the first classroom. A year later the school moved to Pico Boulevard. By 1971 the school finally settled on its current location on Mulholland Drive. Mirman School continues to thrive. It is one of the few schools in the United States dedicated to highly gifted children. The school’s reputation is outstanding. Its alumni include notable figures such as Nathan Myhrvold former CTO of Microsoft. Actors like Crispin Glover and Masi Oka also attended Mirman School. Many other successful individuals have graduated. These remarkable achievements highlight Mirman School’s dedication to nurturing brilliant minds. Mirman School’s unique structure is another noteworthy aspect. It consists of a lower school and an upper school. The lower school has classes from kindergarten through fourth grade. The upper school has classes through eighth grade. Each grade level in the lower school has three classrooms. In the lower school each class has a primary and an assistant teacher. They teach a range of subjects. These subjects include reading mathematics English history and thematic studies. The school also employs specialist teachers for science theatrics music computer skills and foreign languages. The upper school is different. Students attend eight different classes moving from one to another throughout the day. Upper school students have lockers instead of desks. They store their supplies there. The upper school curriculum is rigorous and challenging. It includes science a world language social studies English math physical education art and electives. The LEAP program enhances the learning experience. This program provides additional time for assignments projects or extra help. Field trips are common especially in the lower school. Fourth grade and all upper school grades take overnight field trips. These are often located at wilderness camps in Southern California.
