What secrets does this imposing fortress hold? We are standing before the mighty Al Mirani Fort, a silent sentinel guarding the harbor of old Muscat. For centuries, the Al Mirani Fort has stood watch over the city, its weathered stones whispering tales of a tumultuous past. Built long before the arrival of the Portuguese, the Al Mirani Fort fell under their control in the 16th century. However, in a twist of fate, it played a pivotal role in their eventual downfall. Legend has it that the Portuguese commander fell head over heels for the daughter of a local Hindu supplier. The supplier, however, refused the match due to religious differences. Threatening the supplier with ruin, the commander was outsmarted. The cunning supplier convinced the commander that the fort’s supplies needed a complete overhaul. He spent a year secretly removing the fort’s gunpowder and grain, bit by bit. When the fort was rendered defenseless, the supplier alerted the Omani imam, Sultan Bin Saif, who swiftly recaptured the fort in 1649. The Portuguese were soon expelled from Muscat, their dreams of conquest dashed. Even today, the Al Mirani Fort stands as a testament to Omani resilience and strategic brilliance.
