Rows of headstones stretch before you. This is Miramar National Cemetery. A place of quiet reflection and solemn remembrance.

Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego opened in 2010. It’s a vital addition to the San Diego area. Before its opening San Diego veterans had to travel far for casket burials. The nearest option was Riverside National Cemetery ninety miles away.

This expansive cemetery sprawls across 313 acres. It offers a full range of burial options. These include traditional ground burials and spaces for cremated remains. The design thoughtfully considers the environment. It protects habitats for endangered species like the California gnatcatcher and fairy shrimp.

The first interment was in November 2010. The first casket burial followed in April 2011. Since then thousands of veterans and their families have found their final resting place here. Among them are notable figures like baseball broadcaster Jerry Coleman and football player Rudy Bukich. Even Charles Schroeter a Medal of Honor recipient from the Civil War is buried here.

Notice the Avenue of Flags. Fifty flagpoles stand tall twenty-four hours a day. Each proudly displays an American flag. This impressive display is thanks to volunteers. They include Boy Scouts and members of the USS Ronald Reagan. They generously dedicate their time to maintaining this powerful tribute.

Beyond the Avenue of Flags is the Memorial Walk. It’s a peaceful pathway. It features memorials dedicated to various branches of the military. There you’ll find dedications to the US Navy Nurse Corps and the US Army Special Forces. Take some time to explore and reflect on the sacrifices made by these brave individuals.

The Liberation statue stands near the entrance. It’s a poignant bronze sculpture. It honors veterans who were prisoners of war during America’s conflicts. The 15-foot tall soldier and POW flag create a powerful image of remembrance.

Miramar National Cemetery isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a place of profound meaning. It’s a sanctuary for the fallen. It’s a testament to their service and sacrifice. As you walk among the rows of headstones remember the stories each one represents. Remember their courage and dedication to our country.
