“MIRAMAR” it proclaims in golden letters. That’s the Miramar-Haus right before you. A striking building. It stands proudly on the corner of Schopenstehl and Kattrepel streets.

The Miramar-Haus is a historical Kontorhaus. It’s a testament to Hamburg’s architectural heritage. Built between 1921 and 1922. It’s a prime example of Brick Expressionism. The style is unique to the 1920s.

Architect Max Bach designed this masterpiece. The Miramar Handelsgesellschaft m b H commissioned it. Originally it boasted a steeply pitched roof. Sadly World War II damaged the building. The roof was lost. A flatter roof replaced the original. The current building retains its character though.

Notice the building’s clever design. It fits snugly into the slightly pointed angle of the streets. The curved corner is unusual for its time. It influenced many later buildings. The four upper floors are striking clinker brickwork. The two lower floors are plastered. Several cornices add visual interest. They’re decorated with intricate Zahnfriesen. The cornice above the fourth floor is particularly prominent. A continuous railing runs along the top floor.

The main entrance is especially impressive. It’s on the longer left side facing Schopenstehl street. An ornate frame extends across the two lower floors. It’s filled with sculptures and ornaments. The entrance door is recessed. This creates a small open foyer. Above the door those golden letters shine. Three windows above belong to an office. They are part of the impressive entrance design. The figures on the frame are by Richard Kühl. They show typical Hamburg occupations. A lovely angel hovers above the entrance. He seems to be watching over the building.

Today the Miramar-Haus houses various businesses. There’s a coworking space. A café is there too. There’s also a Brogue Store selling high-quality handcrafted goods. Offices occupy the upper floors. Among the tenants are Murmann Verlag a logistics company and a shipping brokerage.

Take a moment to appreciate this architectural gem. The Miramar-Haus speaks volumes about Hamburg’s rich history. It’s a beautiful piece of the city’s past. It’s a living testament to the city’s thriving past and present.
