Grounded in history and standing firm in Athens is the Mirage F-1 CG. This French fighter jet served the Hellenic Air Force for 28 years. Its presence here marks a significant chapter in Greek aviation history.

The Mirage F-1CG first arrived in Greece on August 4 1975. It landed at Tanagra Air Base. From that day forward, the 114 Combat Wing always operated Mirage fighters. This cemented a lasting legacy.

Greece initially ordered 40 Mirage F-1CG fighters in 1974. Sadly one crashed before delivery in August 1975. This particular airframe replaced that lost aircraft.

These Mirage F-1CGs were assigned to the 334th and 342nd All-Weather Squadrons. They were armed with AIM-9P missiles. Unusually, they could carry four AIM-9Ps. Most fighters only carried two.

These jets played a crucial role. They engaged in mock dogfights with Turkish Air Force planes over the Aegean Sea. This was during a time of disputed waters and airspace in 1987.

One Greek Mirage F-1 crashed on June 18 1992. It was intercepting two Turkish F-16s. Another Mirage F-1 is claimed to have crashed similarly on September 4 1995. On February 8 1995, a Turkish F-16 crashed after dogfighting with Greek F-1s.

There are conflicting accounts. The loss of a Turkish RF-4E on October 20 1995 is confirmed. It is often attributed to a dogfight with a Mirage F-1. However, another claim is denied. The claim is the loss of a Mirage on November 7 1994 to a Turkish F-16. The loss of another RF-4E on November 5 1997 is recorded. It may have been the victim of either an F-16 or a Mirage F-1.

The Hellenic Air Force retired its remaining 27 Mirage F-1CGs on June 30 2003. This was after 28 years of service and 160000 flying hours. General Y. Papanikolaou praised the Mirage F-1s faithful service. He was the Chief of Staff of the Hellenic Air Force. Serge Dassault stressed the exemplary partnership. He was the Honorary Chairman of Dassault Aviation. This partnership existed between the air forces and industries of Greece and France.

Today a number of F-1CG aircraft have been preserved. They stand as permanent reminders of their service. Four are at Tanagra Air Base. Another is at the HAF History Department, Delta Falirou.

The Mirage F-1CG was rugged. It was reliable. It ensured the security of Hellenic airspace. It operated with full independence and autonomy. Its story is one of Franco-Greek cooperation. It is also one of constant vigilance in defending national skies. It is a legacy etched in metal and memory.
