The Miradouro do Monte do Tadeu remains a secret even to many locals. From here you can see Gaia and Gondomar. The history of this area dates back to around 1680. This is when the city’s main viewpoint was established.

But why is it called Miradouro do Monte do Tadeu? The connection to the Congregados is well-documented in the city’s history. Around 1680 a congregation of padres and friars was founded. It honored Saint Philip Neri near São Bento station. You can still visit the Igreja dos Congregados there today.

This congregation acquired a space called Quinta dos Congregados. It was later acquired by the Câmara Municipal do Porto. This happened when all religious orders were closed. Later the space was sold to a private citizen.

The Miradouro do Monte do Tadeu was once called Monte dos Congregados. Before that it was known as Monte de Santa Catarina. Today this residential area needs urban renewal. Yet a visit to this viewpoint is highly recommended.

On sunny days you can see almost all of Greater Porto. This includes Matosinhos Valongo and Vila Nova de Gaia.

The water tower on Monte do Tadeu was Porto’s main water source from 1887 to 1927. Afterwards it still functioned but not as the primary source. Today the site is under reconstruction closed and guarded. Water remains inside these structures.

If you could climb to the top you’d see the ocean and the entire city. The highest point in Porto the Miradouro do Monte do Tadeu offers a unique perspective.
