High above the Pacific Ocean stands MiraCosta College. Its story began not on this hilltop but within the walls of Oceanside High School. In 1934 Oceanside-Carlsbad Junior College opened its doors. Only 16 courses were offered. Just 122 students and 20 faculty members started this journey. It was the second community college in San Diego County.
MiraCosta College however wasn’t always MiraCosta. For nearly 30 years it bore a different name. The college blossomed. Enrollment soared to 500 students by 1959. It needed its own space. Voters approved a bond. A new campus was built.
In 1964 MiraCosta College moved to its current location. The name MiraCosta Spanish for behold the coast perfectly captures the stunning coastal views. The land a portion of a property once owned by Sonja Henie now supports a thriving educational community. The college expanded. A satellite campus opened in Del Mar. Then a new campus in Cardiff-by-the-Sea followed.
The college faced challenges. In 2007 controversy erupted. Allegations of fraud and illegal palm tree sales emerged. Lawsuits were filed. Resignations followed. The college faced scrutiny. But MiraCosta persevered. Administrative changes were made. The college emerged stronger. It is now accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.
Today MiraCosta College offers more than 70 disciplines. Associate degrees are equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor’s degree. More than 50 certificates cater to career-focused students. The college boasts impressive resources. A modern library serves students. A Child Development Center supports students and families. A biotech facility a center of excellence in bioprocessing prepares students for high-tech careers. MiraCosta College is even authorized to offer a bachelor’s degree in Biomanufacturing.
MiraCosta College isn’t just about academics. Its campus buzzes with activity. College Hour events showcase cultural events and student performances. Intramural sports keep students active. The Spartans basketball soccer and surf teams compete fiercely. The college even has a rugby team. The college made history. It pioneered scholarships for transgender and QTPOC students. MiraCosta’s rich past paved the way for its bright future. This is MiraCosta College a beacon of opportunity overlooking the beautiful California coast.
