What comes to mind when you hear the name “Miracle Mile”? This isn’t some mythical place in a fairytale. Miracle Mile is a bustling hub of shops and businesses right here in Coral Gables, Florida. This iconic stretch got its start all the way back in the 1920s. George Merrick, the visionary behind Coral Gables, envisioned a central business district where everything was within walking distance. Miracle Mile, originally a section of Coral Way, was at the heart of it all. After facing challenges during the Great Depression and World War II, Miracle Mile got a new lease on life thanks to forward-thinking developers like George Zain. He saw the potential for a luxurious shopping destination and spearheaded efforts to revitalize the area, leading to its official renaming as “Miracle Mile” in 1955. Over the decades, Miracle Mile has seen its share of changes, from the introduction of a free trolley system to ongoing streetscape redesigns. Yet, it remains a testament to Merrick’s vision: a vibrant commercial center that embodies the unique charm and character of Coral Gables.
