Here stands Mira Mesa Senior High School. This school is more than just brick and mortar. It’s a place of history and community.
Mira Mesa High School opened its doors on September 13, 1976. It was originally named Mira Mesa Jr./Sr. High School. The school was built because the town of Mira Mesa needed more schools. A school bond issue in 1974 made it possible.
Before the school was built, the land was considered wasteland. Native American tribes once lived here. When the Spaniards arrived, the area became part of Rancho Penasquitos. Developers saw the potential to relieve San Diego’s housing shortage in the 1960s.
Mira Mesa High School has a diverse student body. As of 2014–15, the school was 28% Filipino. 22% of students were Hispanic and 14% were White. The school was re-accredited in 2016 by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. This accreditation lasts for six years.
Major construction projects started in 2019. A new building replaced the old bungalow units. A new music building was also built in front of the school.
Mira Mesa High School offers many athletic programs. These include football, basketball, and field hockey. Students can also participate in water polo, swimming, and baseball. Other sports include soccer, tennis, cross country, and dance. There is also volleyball, badminton, softball, wrestling, lacrosse, and track and field.
The Mira Mesa Boys Wrestling team is very successful. From 2012-2024, they won thirteen consecutive League Titles. They have won 24 overall. The team also won thirteen consecutive San Diego City Conference Titles. They won their first CIF Championship in 2014. They were CIF runner-up in 2005, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. The Team won another CIF Championship in 2024. The Girls team was CIF runner-up in 2021 and 2022. The Girls Team were the San Diego Section Masters Champions in 2022. The Girls have won the first two City Conference Girls Championships in 2023 and 2024.
Mira Mesa High School also excels academically. In 2019, the average SAT Verbal score was 527. The average SAT math score was 582. The average overall SAT score was 1672. This was the highest in the city of San Diego. The school has a high post-secondary education rate. 92% of students attend college. Many students go to UCSD or San Diego State University.
Mira Mesa High School is home to the 936th Wing of the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. This unit was established in 1993. It participates in community service events. These events include the Mira Mesa Street Fair and Fourth of July Parade. The unit has four drill teams. There is a Sabre Team, an Armed Fancy Drill Team, and an Unarmed Fancy Drill Team. Also, there is a Color Guard. The program also has special teams. These include a Cyberpatriot Team, an Awareness Presentation Team, and an Academic Team. There is also a Youth Physical Fitness Team.
In 2007, the school gym sheltered many victims. They evacuated from the Witch Creek Fire.
Mira Mesa High School has produced many notable alumni. Chris Chelios is an NHL player and member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Jessica Fischer is a soccer player. Michael Pittman played in the NFL. FaZe Rug is a YouTuber and co-owner of FaZe Clan.
Mira Mesa High School continues its commitment to excellence. Its motto is “We Bleed Blue and Gold.”
