Imagine being William Thorning. Only 17 years old, he leveled his musket at British regulars. He pulled the trigger on that spring morning. It was April 19, 1775. Welcome to Minute Man National Historical Park. This park commemorates the start of the American Revolution.

Minute Man National Historical Park preserves and interprets sites from that famous day. Colonists took up arms here. They defended liberty and touched off the American Revolution. The park helps us understand the events, causes, and consequences of the American Revolution. It also preserves The Wayside, home of major 19th-century American authors.

Here at Concord’s North Bridge, Colonial militia fired the shot heard round the world on April 19, 1775. Ralph Waldo Emerson commemorated this battle in a poem. Minute Man National Park includes the Battle Road Trail. This was the site of the first battle.

The Battle Road Trail saw action on April 19, 1775. You can hike or drive parts of it. A guided walk starts every day at 12:30 pm from the Minute Man Visitor Center. Next along the way is Hartwell Tavern. This is a traditional pre-revolution homestead. The Wayside is the former home of Louisa May Alcott and other literary giants. You can only visit The Wayside with a guided tour.

Minute Man National Park is named after the Minute Men. They were the volunteer American militia who fought for their country. The North Bridge is here, too. Rangers offer a twenty-minute talk here.

You can start your day at the Minute Man Visitor Center. It includes an introduction to the war via multimedia. There is also a North Bridge Visitor Center. It holds a brass cannon called The Hancock. Guided tours and ranger programs are available, as are audio guides.

Minute Man National Historical Park was formally created on September 21, 1959. It preserves historic structures and landscapes. These are associated with the opening of the American Revolution. The park stretches through Lexington, Lincoln, and Concord. It comprises approximately 970 acres.

The Old North Bridge is included. Fighting occurred here on the morning of April 19, 1775. You can walk the path the Massachusetts militia took. They approached the British line on that spring day. A five-mile portion of Battle Road is also included. The British retreated to Boston via this route. They sustained a continued engagement with the colonial militia. Original houses, taverns, and restored stonework transport visitors back to the 18th century.

The Wayside became part of the park six years after its creation. Amos Alcott, Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Margaret Sidney all lived here. Louisa May Alcott acted out scenes from Little Women here. Nathaniel Hawthorne named the house The Wayside in the 19th century.

The Barrett Farm is another addition to the park. Locals and the National Park Service marked the graves of some of the fallen on both sides. A Bostonian gave a donation to preserve the gravesite of one casualty. A Massachusetts citizen gave funds to commemorate the engagement. It includes the last stanza of a poem by James Russell Lowell.

Minute Man National Historical Park preserves the history of that fateful April day. It also highlights the repercussions before and after. It is a reminder of the twin veins that run through our nation.
