The Minskoff Theatre opened in 1973. It’s named after Sam Minskoff and Sons. They were prolific local real estate developers. Kahn and Jacobs designed this unique venue.
The Minskoff Theatre is part of One Astor Plaza. It is managed by the Nederlander Organization. They have a nine-venue Broadway theater empire. With 1700 seats, the Minskoff Theatre has decorative fittings and plush seating. Since 2006, it has been the home of Disney’s The Lion King.
But how did this theater come to be in such an unusual location? After World War Two Manhattan started to change. Industries disappeared. Broadway remained strong. Times Square became dangerous in the early 1960s. Tourists stopped going to the area. Restaurants closed because of increased crime.
The hero of our story is Mayor John Lindsay. He took office in 1966. He wanted to clean up Times Square. Minskoff and Sons planned to build a skyscraper where the Hotel Astor once stood. The Minskoff Theatre became part of the Broadway district. In the 1970s, shows like Henry Fonda’s Clarence Darrow and Bette Midler’s Clams on the Half Shell Revue were performed here. In the 1980s, the theater hosted Cabaret, Sweet Charity, and West Side Story. More recently, Fiddler on the Roof and Saturday Night Fever have graced its stage.
The Minskoff Theatre has a continental seating layout. There is no middle aisle. Rows can have up to 52 seats. The Minskoff was the first fully wheelchair-accessible Broadway theater in New York City.
One Astor Plaza’s eastern section is above the theater. It is supported by the theater’s roof. The theater roof has a Vierendeel truss. It rests on two heavy girders.
The Minskoff Theatre has hosted many notable productions. These include Irene, West Side Story, and The Pirates of Penzance. The Lion King has been here since 2006. In 2014, The Lion King became Broadway’s highest-grossing musical ever.
