Ensuring the health of Ghanaians that is the monumental task entrusted to the Ministry of Health. The Ministry of Health stands as a beacon of hope and well-being. It is located right here in Accra.

The Ministry of Health is the government ministry of Ghana. It is responsible for the health of Ghanaians. Established in 1957, the Ministry plays a crucial role. It provides public health services. It manages Ghana’s healthcare industry. It builds Ghana’s hospitals and medical education system.

For many years, the Ministry of Health directly delivered public health services. It handled promotion, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. However, with the enactment of ACT 525, these functions shifted. They were delegated to the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals. Now, the Ministry focuses on policy formulation. It also handles monitoring, evaluation, resource mobilization, and regulation.

Several agencies operate under the Ministry of Health. These agencies include the Ghana Medical and Dental Council. There is also the Pharmacy Council Ghana. Others are the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives. The Alternative Medicine Council is also an agency. Do not forget the Foods and Drug Authority. The Private Hospitals and Maternity Homes Board is included too. The National Health Insurance Authority is also part of the agencies. Finally, there is the Ghana National Drugs Programme.

The Ministry of Health has undertaken significant projects. One such project is the Construction and Equipping of a 597-Bed University Hospital At Legon. Former President John Dramani Mahama inaugurated the University of Ghana Medical Centre in 2016. The hospital project began in 2012. In 2017, the project stalled. Parliament then approved $50 million to finalize the construction. The Health Minister assured Ghanaians of the government’s commitment. They are dedicated to a high-quality healthcare system. No opportunity to achieve this goal would be overlooked.

Another key initiative is the Implementation of the National E-Health Project. This project seeks to ease the challenges of hospitals. It helps them in managing patients’ data and sensitive information.

The Ministry has been led by dedicated individuals. In 2023, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu served as Minister. Victor Asare Bampoe was Deputy Minister from 2014 to 2017. Bernard Okoe-Boye also served as Deputy Minister from 2020 to 2021. In 2023, Alhaji Hafiz Adam was the Chief Director.

The Ministry of Health continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the changing healthcare needs of Ghana. It tackles old challenges. It addresses new challenges. It is committed to improving the health and well-being of all Ghanaians. As you stand here, remember the dedication and hard work. This is what goes on within these walls. The Ministry of Health is truly shaping a healthier future for Ghana.
