General Aslam Watanjar later held the position. In 1990 forces loyal to Minister of Defence Shahnawaz Tanai attempted a coup. General Watanjar thwarted it. He became Minister of Defence. He was the last Minister of the DRA.

The Ministry also published an annual magazine. It was called The Military Magazine. It began in 1967 during the Kingdom of Afghanistan. Publication continued under the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.

During the Islamic Republic period 2004-2021 the President nominated the Defence Minister. The National Assembly approved the nomination. One function was disarming insurgent groups. The Afghan New Beginnings Programme aimed at rehabilitating child soldiers. These groups formed after the fall of the Najibullah government in 1992.
