Laauli Leuatea Polataivao Fosi serves as the Minister of Agriculture. He represents Gagaifomauga No. 3. This is his fourth term in Parliament. Laauli co-founded the Fa’atuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi Political Party. He was educated at Marist Brothers, Mulivai and St. Joseph’s College, Alafua. Laauli also attended the National University of Samoa. He earned a degree in Parliamentary Laws & Procedures from the University of Tasmania.
Laauli had a long career in finance with Polynesian Airlines and ANNSETT Australia. He also owns a business and is a Red Cross member. Laauli chaired Yazaki Samoa Catering Services and Samoa United Caterers. The latter catered the South Pacific Games in 2007. He served as Deputy Speaker and Speaker of the House. Laauli was Minister of Agriculture from 2016 to 2018.
The Fisheries Division plays a vital role within the Ministry of Agriculture & Fishery. It undertakes research and analysis. It also monitors and reports on fisheries and aquaculture. This informs sustainable development and management. The division works with various agencies and communities. They address issues affecting fisheries resources and ecosystems. It advises on aquaculture and fisheries management. These efforts benefit current and future generations.
The Community-Based Fisheries Management Program engages coastal communities. It helps them manage and protect their resources. This “bottom-up” approach empowers communities. They manage their marine environment with support from the Fisheries Division. This program aligns with Samoan customs and traditions. It encourages communities to take responsibility for their resources. More than 120 coastal villages participate. Eighty percent are fully active in executing their management plans.
The Coastal/Inshore Fisheries Section manages Samoa’s coastal fisheries. The Offshore Section manages oceanic fisheries. It also develops the commercial fisheries sector. The Aquaculture Section farms aquatic organisms. This reduces pressure on marine fishing. The Fisheries Surveillance and Enforcement ensures compliance with the Fisheries Management Act 2016.
The Competent Authority verifies and certifies fish exports. It ensures Samoan fish products meet international standards. The Ministry of Agriculture & Fishery maintains the Apia Fish Market. They ensure it meets hygiene standards. The ministry also oversees facilities like the Toloa Multispecies Hatchery. The Ministry of Agriculture & Fishery’s work helps ensure prosperity and well-being for all Samoans.
