Why did King Bodawpaya begin constructing a massive stupa in Mingun, only to leave it unfinished? Here on the banks of the Irrawaddy River, the Mingun Pahtodawgyi stands as a testament to his ambition and eccentricities. Construction began in 1790. King Bodawpaya envisioned the Mingun Pahtodawgyi as the world’s largest Buddhist monument, a towering symbol of his power and devotion. He even established an observation post on a nearby island to personally oversee the project. The colossal structure was to reach a height of 150 meters. However, it remains at only 50 meters, a third of its intended size. A prophecy circulated, claiming that the king’s reign would end upon the stupa’s completion. This prophecy, combined with the immense strain on the kingdom’s resources, led to the project’s eventual abandonment upon Bodawpaya’s death in 1819. The Mingun Pahtodawgyi is an imposing sight. It is a massive brick structure, cracked and scarred by an 1839 earthquake. While incomplete, it holds the record for the largest pile of bricks in the world. This is not merely a tourist attraction. Within the eastern portal lies a small, active shrine, a place of worship and quiet contemplation. Visitors can climb the modern stairway to the top of the Mingun Pahtodawgyi. From there, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Irrawaddy River. You can also see the surrounding landscape. This unfinished monument offers a unique perspective on Burmese history. It symbolizes the grand ambitions and the unpredictable forces that shape a nation’s destiny. Close by, you’ll find the Mingun Bell, another testament to Bodawpaya’s grand vision. This 90-ton behemoth is the second largest ringing bell in the world. Its inscription encodes its weight in Burmese measurement: 55,555 viss, represented by the mnemonic “Min Hpyu Hman Hman Pyaw.” Mingun offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. It’s a place where ambition met prophecy, and where a colossal dream remains forever unfinished yet undeniably impressive.
