Curious about the Isle of Man’s most haunted house? Welcome to Milntown Estate & Gardens. It is a place steeped in history and surrounded by fifteen acres of beautiful gardens. Milntown Estate is the only country house and garden open to the public on the Isle of Man.

The Milntown Estate was founded in the early 16th century. The McCrystyn family first owned it. Their name later simplified to the Christian family. William Christian was a famous member. He was also known as Illiam Dhone. He was executed for treason in 1663. The last Christian family member died at Milntown in 1886.

The house got its Gothic facade in the 1830s. Deemster John Christian added it around an earlier Georgian core. People say it is the most haunted house on the Island. Many believe members of the Christian family haunt it.

Explore fifteen acres of mature gardens and woodlands. Discover the tranquil mill pond. Resident ducks live there. The mill pond feeds the Milntown Corn water mill. It is now a workshop. Admire garden sculptures by local Manx artists.

Take a guided tour of Milntown House. Tours are available on Wednesdays and Saturdays from April to October. The tour includes the entrance hall, library, and dining room. See the drawing room, Lady Edwards apartment, and the green bedroom. The tour lasts about one hour and fifteen minutes.

Milntown Café is set in a light conservatory. It overlooks the Winchester Gates and walled garden. Enjoy delicious breakfasts, seasonal dishes, and light lunches. Try homemade soups and tempting cakes. Cream teas are a specialty. The Milntown Cafe enjoys a reputation for serving the best cream teas on the Island.

Sir Clive Edwards left Milntown in trust to the Manx people in 1999. He also left his collection of vintage cars and motorbikes. They are on display here.

The gardens are open Wednesdays to Sundays. You can visit from 9.30 am until 5.00 pm. The last admission to the gardens is at 4.00 pm.

Milntown has parking for disabled visitors. Accessible toilets are available. Not all areas are suitable for wheelchair access due to the age and nature of the house and gardens.
