Free? In this city? You might be surprised to learn that the Miller Outdoor Theatre, right here in the heart of Houston, has been offering free performances to the public for over a century. The Miller Outdoor Theatre first opened its doors, or rather its stage, to the public in 1923. It was a gift to the city from Jesse Wright Miller, a local businessman with a passion for the arts. He envisioned a space where everyone, regardless of their background, could enjoy quality entertainment. And what better way to do that than under the open sky? The original structure was a beautiful amphitheater. However, as the city grew, so did the need for a more modern venue. In 1968, a brand new theater was built, boasting a unique design with a massive canopy that could accommodate thousands. This new design meant that even Houston’s unpredictable weather couldn’t dampen the show’s spirit! Over the years, the Miller Outdoor Theatre has hosted a dazzling array of performances. From classical music and opera to jazz, ballet, and even Shakespearean plays, there’s something for everyone on this stage. And the best part is, it’s still completely free to this day!
