A simple, yet striking monument greets us here. It’s the Millennium Stone, Maughold. A silent sentinel marking the passage of time. The Millennium Stone, Maughold isn’t ancient like some of the sites we’ve seen. But it represents a modern echo of the island’s deep-rooted connection to its past. In the year 2000, the Isle of Man, along with communities across the world, celebrated the new millennium. Here in Maughold, they chose to mark the occasion with something both timeless and contemporary: the Millennium Stone. Commissioned by the Department of Local Government and the Environment, the project saw twenty-four stones placed across the island. Each of the seventeen parishes and seven towns received one of these unique markers. The Millennium Stone, Maughold, crafted from dark Pooil Vaaish limestone, stands on a plinth. Its design, a modern interpretation of the Celtic cross, was created by Steve Prescott. This style connects it to the island’s rich Celtic heritage. Many of the stones, including the Millennium Stone, Maughold, were further enhanced by the planting of trees or other landscaping. These groves symbolize growth and hope for the future. They provide a living complement to the stoic permanence of the stone. So as you stand before the Millennium Stone, Maughold, consider the bridge it forms between the past and the future. A testament to the enduring spirit of this island.
