Mila the Quebec AI Institute isn’t just a building. It’s a hub a powerhouse of artificial intelligence. Founded in 1993 it started as the Laboratoire d’informatique des systèmes adaptatifs. LISA at the Université de Montréal. Yoshua Bengio a Turing Award winner spearheaded this. He’s a founding father of deep learning.
Over the years Mila grew. It became a partnership. The Université de Montréal and McGill University joined forces. École Polytechnique de Montréal and HEC Montréal also joined. By 2022 Mila boasted 100 faculty members. Around 1000 students and researchers were also part of this community.

Theano an early deep learning framework originated at Mila. Later projects included Myia and baby-ai. Myia is a deep learning framework for Python. Baby-ai simulates language learning with human interaction.
