Envision a scene. A triumphant return, frozen in bronze for eternity. This is the Mikhail Kutuzov Statue, a monument to a military genius who saved Russia.

The Mikhail Kutuzov Statue stands as a tribute to one of Russia’s most celebrated military figures. Kutuzov is famed for his victory over Napoleon in 1812. He stands here, forever vigilant.

Let’s delve into the story behind this imposing figure. Mikhail Kutuzov’s life was one of dedication to the Russian army. He participated in numerous campaigns. During Catherine the Great’s reign, Kutuzov fought in the Russo-Turkish wars. Tragically, he was critically injured twice. He even lost an eye.

His most significant role came in 1812. Kutuzov became commander of Russian forces against Napoleon’s invading army. Following the bloody Battle of Borodino, Kutuzov made a strategic decision. He withdrew from Moscow. This difficult choice ultimately led to Napoleon’s defeat. Kutuzov’s strategy involved retreating and using scorched-earth tactics. This lured the enemy deep into Russia.

Initially, Barclay de Tolley advocated this strategy. But his role wasn’t recognized. When Emperor Alexander I became concerned, he replaced de Tolley with Kutuzov. Kutuzov followed de Tolley’s plan and secured victory. After driving Napoleon out, Kutuzov received high honors. He was granted the rank of Field Marshal. He also became Prince of Smolensk. Kutuzov was the first full cavalier of the Order of St. George, First Class. In 1813, he commanded the allied Russo-Prussian forces.

Sadly, Kutuzov’s life ended that same year. However, his legacy lived on. The Mikhail Kutuzov Statue serves as a reminder of his strategic brilliance.

The statues of Mikhail Kutuzov and Barclay de Tolley stand outside Kazan Cathedral. They were erected in 1838. Boris Orlovsky sculpted both figures. He dressed them in togas over their military uniforms. This reflects the Roman Classicism style popular at the time.

Orlovsky himself had a remarkable story. Born into a peasant family, his artistic talent led to his freedom. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. Later, he taught at the Academy. Orlovsky also created the Angel atop the Alexander Column on Palace Square.

The Mikhail Kutuzov Statue is more than just a sculpture. It embodies resilience, strategic thinking, and dedication to the motherland. As you gaze upon this monument, remember the pivotal role Mikhail Kutuzov played in Russian history. His leadership ensured the country’s survival during one of its greatest trials.
