Did the founders of Miếu Trung Liệt foresee its turbulent journey through time? Miếu Trung Liệt, also known as Võ Miếu, stands as a testament to Vietnam’s resilience. It’s a memorial to military figures, particularly those loyal to the Nguyễn dynasty. Originally built in 1685 near the Temple of Literature, Miếu Trung Liệt honored figures like Lê Lai. The temple became a place for annual royal visits, where emperors paid their respects. Miếu Trung Liệt’s story reflects the nation’s own. During the 19th century, the temple was relocated to its present location near Gò Đống Đa. It began to commemorate Nguyễn officials who perished in the First Indochina War, figures like Nguyễn Tri Phương, his son Nguyễn Lâm, along with Hoàng Diệu and others. Later, in 1946, the remains of Emperor Quang Trung were also enshrined within Miếu Trung Liệt. Sadly, much of the original temple has been lost. Only the gate and the stairs leading up to it still stand. Fragments of the temple’s foundation remain, a poignant reminder of its former grandeur. A particularly interesting piece of Miếu Trung Liệt’s history lies in a pair of parallel sentences inscribed on the gate. One translation reads: “This citadel of stone, this river of crimson, white flags fluttering, everywhere the sound of drums and gongs.” The other says, “Solemnly guarding the temple, day and night, throughout the decade, the soul brings the fragrance of offerings to heaven.” These lines speak to both the turmoil of war and the serenity of remembrance. While the original temple may be gone, the spirit of Miếu Trung Liệt endures. It persists in the memory of those honored within its walls and in the hearts of those who visit this hallowed ground.
