Miếu Bà An Thạnh also called Miếu Bà Tân Phú was built in 1844. Its original name was Miếu Bà Ngũ Hành Thành Hoàng Chú Sứ Nương Nương. Later when the Tân Phú hamlet was founded the temple was renamed Miếu Bà Tân Phú. Locals often call it Miếu Bà Cây Da because of a large tree that once stood in front.
Initially Miếu Bà An Thạnh was constructed with light materials such as wood. Over time damages required repairs. In 1960 a major restoration took place. However in 1970 part of the donated land was reclaimed. The elders decided to rebuild the temple on a smaller scale. In 2009 road construction forced Miếu Bà An Thạnh to be moved back. The entire structure was rebuilt with concrete.
During the French resistance in the 1930s and 1940s Miếu Bà An Thạnh served as a meeting point. People gathered here to plan actions against French outposts. Later during the American war Miếu Bà An Thạnh was no longer a meeting place. Yet residents continuously donated money to support the resistance.
Currently Miếu Bà An Thạnh is looked after by a caretaker. The temple management board meets during festivals to discuss important matters. Mr. Nguyễn Ảnh Trắng is the current head of the temple.
The temple celebrates several major festivals each year. The Kỳ Yên ceremony takes place on the 16th day of the first lunar month. The founding anniversary of Miếu Bà is celebrated on the 18th day of the eighth lunar month. Every three years depending on economic conditions Miếu Bà An Thạnh organizes a large folk ritual. This includes offerings of flowers lights and traditional performances.
Another temple called Thiên Hậu Temple also exists in Ho Chi Minh City. It was erected around 1760 by the Cantonese community. This temple is dedicated to Mazu the Chinese Goddess of the Sea. The Vietnamese also know her as the Lady of the Sea. Mazuism often blends with Taoism and Chinese Buddhism.
