What if I told you that this unassuming playground had a past? Middle Village Playground wasn’t always swings and slides. This land tells a story of community growth and transformation.
Middle Village Playground derives its name from the surrounding neighborhood of Middle Village. The playground sits on 79th Street between 68th Road and 69th Avenue. Middle Village got its name because it was midway between two emerging townships. These were Kew Gardens and Forest Hills.
In the 1840s, immigrants flocked to the United States seeking opportunity. Middle Village’s fertile soil and nearby industrial growth attracted them. The community grew and adopted the name Middle Village in 1850. It wanted to stand out from Maspeth.
Now, let’s jump to the 1930s. Between 1935 and 1938, the Parks Department leased this land. It leased it from the Gorbess Realty Corporation. In 1938, the city purchased the property.
The Works Progress Administration transformed Middle Village Playground. In 1935, the playground opened with handball courts and play equipment. By 1942, major upgrades were complete. The WPA resurfaced the playground with asphalt. This allowed for year-round use. They built a concrete curb and wall around the perimeter. This created level play surfaces.
Imagine the sounds of construction. Workers installed a brick comfort station. They created a free play area. Basketball standards were relocated. A new double handball court was added. There was also a kindergarten apparatus area. Swings were protected by new fencing. Seesaws were relocated. New slides were installed. A pipe frame exercise unit was also relocated.
A tree-planted border extended around three sides of Middle Village Playground. The concrete boundary walks were widened. By 1934, New York City had 119 playgrounds. 63 of those had been reconstructed. Today, the park system boasts 463 playgrounds.
In July 1994, Middle Village Playground received a reconstruction sponsored by Mayor Giuliani. Today, you will find handball courts, basketball half-courts and a boccie court. Swings, play equipment, benches, a water fountain, and a spray shower are also here.
Middle Village Playground stands as a testament to community development. It shows the importance of accessible public spaces. From its humble beginnings to its current form, this playground remains a vital part of Middle Village. So, as you enjoy this playground remember its rich history. It is a place shaped by immigrants, and community investment.
