Wow. Look at the Michigan Building. A giant among its neighbours.

This magnificent structure isn’t just another office building. It’s a time capsule. A testament to Detroit’s vibrant past. Once upon a time the Michigan Building housed the Michigan Theater. A dazzling movie palace that opened its doors in 1926.

Designed by the architectural firm Rapp & Rapp it was a lavish spectacle. The theater cost a staggering $5 million to build. That’s equivalent to $62 million today. Imagine the opulence. The grandeur. The sheer scale. It could seat 4050 people. One of the largest in Michigan. A true entertainment giant.

The Michigan Theater wasn’t just for films. Legends like John Philip Sousa Benny Goodman and even the Marx Brothers graced its stage. Later it hosted rock concerts. David Bowie played here. So did KISS. Before they hit the big time. Before Cobo Arena.

Then in 1976 the curtain fell. The Michigan Theater closed its doors. It became The Michigan Palace nightclub. But its story didn’t end there. Office tenants threatened to leave without adequate parking. So the building owners made a drastic decision. They gutted the theater. They turned it into a parking garage. The theater couldn’t be completely demolished. It’s integral to the building’s structure. Parts of the original theater remain hidden within. Ornate plaster ceilings still exist. So do parts of the mezzanine and balcony foyers. Even the old projection booth survives.

Ironically the Michigan Theater was built on the site of Henry Ford’s first workshop. That workshop was moved brick by brick to the Henry Ford Museum. Today the Michigan Building is a unique blend of past and present. A testament to Detroit’s resilience. It’s a reminder that even when things change. The echoes of the past can endure. It’s a captivating mix. It’s a building that deserves a second look. It’s a glimpse of what once was. And what still is. This iconic building stands tall a landmark in Detroit’s ever-evolving story.
