Wow. Look at the Michelle and Barack Obama Sports Complex. It’s truly impressive isn’t it?
This wasn’t always such a magnificent place. It started life in 1936 as the Rancho Cienega Recreation Center. Construction began that year. The center opened in 1937. It partnered with the newly opened Susan Miller Dorsey High School. The high school used the center for its sporting events. For decades the Rancho Cienega Recreation Center served the community.
But times change. In 2007 Barack Obama held a rally here. That was during the beginning of his presidential campaign. This event is part of the complex’s history. The rally probably gave this place more visibility. Later in 2013 the Los Angeles Dodgers and the LA84 Foundation added a Dodgers Dreamfield. This was the 30th Dreamfield they unveiled.
Then came a major transformation. In 2015 the City of Los Angeles decided on an expansion. Studio Pali Fekete Architects were chosen to lead the redevelopment. The goal was to create a modern sports complex. They aimed for LEED silver certification. The design also focused on net-zero energy use. The project took years. By April 2021 it was 95 percent complete.
Finally on June 29 2022 the Michelle and Barack Obama Sports Complex opened. The complex now boasts 24 acres. There’s an indoor gym. It also features two high school basketball courts a mezzanine walking track and a new Olympic-size pool. The basketball court renovation was part of a city and Los Angeles Clippers initiative. Their goal was to renovate 350 courts across Los Angeles. The public opening was on July 7 2022.
The Michelle and Barack Obama Sports Complex is more than just a sports facility. It’s a community hub. It provides a place for recreation and healthy living.
