“Too short,” they said. That’s the story of August Michel. Now, let’s discover more about Michel Triangle.

Michel Triangle stands as a tribute. It honors August Michel. He was a Bronx native. He became famous for his service in the United States Army.

In 1940, New York City dedicated this small triangle to his memory. August Michel’s story is one of determination. It’s also a story of sacrifice.

Born in 1900, August Michel faced a challenge. He was one of the smallest men to enlist in the U.S. Army. The army initially rejected him. He didn’t meet the height requirements.

Undeterred, Michel began “stretching” exercises. He was determined to serve his country. Eventually, he met the standard. He entered the Army on April 22, 1918.

Tragedy struck when Michel was just 18. While serving at Camp Bowie, Texas, he contracted the Spanish Flu. This was during the great Influenza Plague of 1918.

The plague was devastating. It killed more Americans than all the wars of the 20th century. Michel showed remarkable selflessness. He believed others were sicker than he was. He gave up his hospital bed.

Sadly, his condition worsened. He suffered a relapse. August Michel died on October 22, 1918.

Michel Triangle is a small plot of land. Clay Avenue, Webster Avenue, and East 165th Street border it. The city acquired this property in 1897. It was for street construction.

For many years, the park remained nameless. The city later chose to honor August Michel. He was a brave young man from the community.

The inscription on the plaque at Michel Triangle tells his story. It speaks of his small stature. It also speaks of his immense bravery.

Think about it. A young man. Rejected for his size. Yet, he persevered. He stretched himself to meet the challenge.

He sacrificed his own comfort for others. He embodies the spirit of service. Michel Triangle is a reminder of his contribution. It also honors his sacrifice.

So, as you stand here at Michel Triangle, remember August Michel. Remember his determination. Remember his selflessness. This small triangle carries a large legacy. It is a legacy of courage. It is a legacy of service.
