What if this Mi-4 Helicopter could talk? It would tell tales of Soviet engineering and global impact. This Mil Mi-4, NATO reporting name Hound, is a Soviet transport helicopter. It served in both military and civilian roles. The Mi-4 before you stands as a testament to a bygone era.

The Mi-4’s design was a direct response to American helicopters like the H-19 Chickasaw. The Soviets observed the deployment of U.S. helicopters during the Korean War. While resembling the H-19, the Mi-4 is larger. It could lift more weight. It was built in greater numbers. The first Mi-4 model entered service in 1953. The world got its first glimpse in 1952 at the Soviet Aviation Day in Tushino Airfield.

The Mi-4 transport helicopter laid the groundwork for Soviet Army Aviation. It was used widely in the armed forces and Soviet civil aviation. For decades, it was the main helicopter in the Soviet Armed Forces and Civil Air Fleet. The Mi-4 phased out with the development of the Mi-8. The Russian Air Force no longer uses it. However, some countries still used it as a utility or military transport. Albania was thought to be the final country using it. By 2005, all were out of service.

This Mi-4 played an important role in the Bangladesh liberation war of 1971. It was the workhorse of the Indian Air Force, covering the medium lift role. The Meghna Heli Bridge was a successful heli-borne operation. Mi-4s helped the Indian Army’s 57 Mountain Division cross the Meghna River. The first heli-borne operation of the Indian army was the helilift of a battalion of Indian troops to Sylhet’s outskirts.

Much like the UH-1 Huey, the Mi-4 found domestic roles after military service. These roles included search and rescue and firefighting. It was used for polar expeditions. It served as a construction site cargo helicopter and for commercial flights.

An official video from 2014 showed the North Korean Air Force still using the Mi-4. The video showed a combat flying skills competition.

There were many Mi-4 variants. The Mi-4A was an assault transport helicopter. The Mi-4AV was armed with ATGMs and NARs. The Mi-4L Lyukes was a six-seat VIP transport. It sometimes converted into an air ambulance. The Mi-4P/Mi-4VP was a civil transport helicopter. It could carry 8 to 11 passengers. It also could carry stretchers and a medical attendant. The Mi-4S Salon was a VIP transport helicopter. The Mi-4Skh was an agricultural helicopter. It could carry a large chemical container. It was also used as a firefighting helicopter.

The Mi-4 had a crew of one or two. It could carry 16 troops or 1,600 kg of cargo. It had a maximum speed of 185 km/h. Its range was 500 km. The service ceiling was 5,500 m.

The Mil Mi-4 is more than just metal and machinery. It represents innovation, adaptation, and global impact. Take a moment to appreciate its history. Think about the stories it could tell.
