Tucked away in the bustling heart of Peschiera Borromeo lies the quaint village of Mezzate. Don’t let its unassuming presence fool you. Mezzate holds a rich history that whispers tales of ancient Milan. Mezzate was once a significant agricultural hub. It was the center of a pieve, an ecclesiastical district, showcasing its importance in the region. This pieve encompassed other notable areas, including Linate and Peschiera, demonstrating Mezzate’s historical influence. In 1757, this thriving village boasted a population of 180 inhabitants and shared borders with Foramagno, painting a picture of a bustling community amidst the vast Lombard landscape. Mezzate’s story took a turn during the Napoleonic era. Between 1809 and 1816, it became a frazione, a subdivision, of Peschiera. It regained its autonomy with the establishment of the Lombardo-Veneto Kingdom, its spirit unbroken. Around this time, its population stood at 194, a testament to its resilience. Mezzate experienced significant growth in 1841. The communes of Linate Superiore and Inferiore were incorporated, boosting its population to 694. This expansion continued in 1870 with the addition of Morsenchio and Zelo Foramagno, raising the total to 1694. Mezzate’s role shifted again in 1916 when the municipal seat moved to Linate, leading to a name change. Mezzate became Linate al Lambro. Mezzate was then designated as a frazione. This transition wasn’t the end for Mezzate. Despite becoming part of Peschiera Borromeo in 1933, Mezzate experienced a resurgence after World War II. New residential and industrial settlements breathed new life into this historic village, solidifying its place in the fabric of Milan. Today, Mezzate stands as a quiet testament to its vibrant past. It is a place where history and modernity intertwine, offering a glimpse into the ever-evolving story of Milan.
