Have you ever noticed how art can tell a story? Today we are standing before the Mexico Sculpture. It is a landmark here in Los Angeles. But the story of Mexican art in Los Angeles is also one of loss and rediscovery.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine El Parque de Mexico in Lincoln Heights in 1976. Councilmember Art Snyder secured funds to create it. The park was intended as a tribute. It honored the heritage of the Mexican community. Across the street stood Lincoln Park. It had hosted Cinco de Mayo celebrations since the 1930s.

El Parque de Mexico once held 33 sculptures. Each represented a Mexican state. Each sculpture had a plaque. The plaques detailed who the sculpture honored. They also listed the names of donors. The Mexican government, local organizations, and individuals donated them.

Among those honored were Pancho Villa. Also General Ignacio Zaragoza and poet Ramón Lopez Velarde. Lázaro Cárdenas, a former Mexican president was honored. He nationalized Mexico’s oil industry.

Frank Villalobos’ firm designed El Parque de Mexico. He remembered the pride in mexicanidad back then. The last statue was installed in 1996. But over time the park suffered. Vandals targeted the monuments. Statues disappeared.

Pancho Villa’s bust was stolen a decade ago. It was recovered and then stolen again. It has never been seen since. Other statues also vanished. The arch that held a replica of Miguel Hidalgo’s bell was empty.

Sergio Mariscal from the Mexican Consulate visited the park. He was dismayed. Gang graffiti defaced the statue of Emiliano Zapata. The monument to Jose Maria Morelos suffered the same fate. Plaques and lettering were stolen.

Villalobos contacted the Department of Recreation and Parks. He wanted to know if the statues were removed for safekeeping. He never received a response. He sent a letter to Councilmember Gil Cedillo. Cedillo’s office did not respond initially.

Today, the future of El Parque de Mexico is uncertain. A new council member is in charge. There are plans to restore the park. The city hopes to team up with city departments. They want to reach out to the original donors and artists. The goal is to bring back the park to its past glory.

Despite the challenges Mexican art still stands proud. LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes celebrates the history, art, and culture of Mexicans, Mexican Americans, and all Latinos. It is a Smithsonian affiliate museum. It offers exhibitions, educational initiatives, and public programs. It’s a great place to experience Latinx culture. You can enjoy music, dance, culinary arts, and artmaking experiences.

The Mexico Sculpture is a testament to cultural pride and artistic expression. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to preserve and celebrate Mexican heritage. Its presence enriches the cultural landscape of Los Angeles.
