From a transit camp to a thriving town. That, in short, is the story of Mevaseret Zion. Look around you. Mevaseret Zion stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of its people. The name itself, meaning “Herald of Zion,” evokes a sense of hope and proclamation. The story of Mevaseret Zion begins in 1951. New immigrants, primarily from Iraq, Kurdistan, North Africa, and Iran, were initially housed in a ma’abara, a transit camp, at the foot of Castel Hill. Many found employment at the nearby Solel Boneh stone quarry. They carved out a new life amidst the stones, echoing the ancient builders who once fortified this strategic location. Mevaseret Zion, however, is not just one story, but a weaving of two. In 1956, another community emerged just east of Ma’oz Zion. Mevasseret Yerushalayim, primarily settled by Jewish immigrants from North Africa, took root on a ridge near the armistice line. These settlers cultivated the fruit orchards in the Arazim Valley. Their lives were intertwined with the land, a stark contrast to the stone quarry of Ma’oz Zion. In 1963, these distinct communities, each with its own character and origins, united under the banner of Mevaseret Zion. The name, taken from the Book of Isaiah 40:9, “Ascend a lofty mountain, O herald of joy to Zion,” reflects the spirit of hope and renewal that imbued this burgeoning town. Mevaseret Zion continued to grow, attracting new residents and expanding its footprint. Today, it boasts 15 neighborhoods. It has the distinction of being the wealthiest municipality per capita in the Jerusalem District. This prosperity echoes the hard work and determination of those early settlers. Mevaseret Zion is more than just a town; it is a symbol of the human spirit’s capacity to build and create. It is a place where the echoes of ancient battles mingle with the sounds of modern life. It is a place where the stories of two communities converge to create a unique and vibrant tapestry.
