Whispers of ancient battles echo through the air here at Mevaseret Zion. This town wasn’t always a single entity. It began as two distinct townships. They were Maoz Zion and Mevaseret Yerushalayim. Now Mevaseret Zion stands as one local council.
Mevaseret Zion is perched high on a mountain ridge. It sits 750 meters above sea level. Look around. You will see it is located on the outskirts of Jerusalem.
Its strategic location has shaped its history. The Romans recognized its importance long ago. They built a fortress here called Castellum. Later the Crusaders arrived. They built their castle on the same spot. They called it Castellum Belveer.
Centuries passed. The area became a small Arab village. It was known as al-Qastal. During the British Mandate, the British called it “The Castle”. In the 1948 War of Independence, fierce battles raged here. Arabs and Jews fought for control of al-Qastal. It overlooked the main Tel Aviv-Jerusalem highway. The control changed hands several times.
A turning point came with the death of Abd al-Qadir al-Husayni. He was a revered Arab commander. Many Arabs left their positions to attend his funeral. On April 9, 1948, Israeli forces captured al-Qastal.
In 1951, Maoz Zion was established. It housed new immigrants. They came from Iraq, Kurdistan, North Africa, and Iran. They lived in a transit camp at the foot of the Castel. Many worked at the Solel Boneh stone quarry.
Mevaseret Yerushalayim followed in 1956. Jewish immigrants from North Africa founded it. It was located on a ridge near the armistice line. Residents worked in the fruit orchards of the Arazim Valley.
In 1963, Maoz Zion and Mevaseret Yerushalayim joined together. They formed a joint local council. They chose the name Mevaseret Zion. The name comes from the Book of Isaiah. It means “Herald of Zion”.
Today Mevaseret Zion is a thriving community. It has a population of over 25,000 residents. It is known as the wealthiest municipality per capita in the Jerusalem District. The town continues to grow and develop. New neighborhoods have been added. It attracts Jerusalem residents seeking an upscale location.
Mevaseret Zion also embraces its role as an absorption center. It welcomes new immigrants to Israel. The Har’el shopping mall serves residents and travelers.
The world’s first kosher McDonald’s once stood here. It opened in 1995.
Mevaseret Zion also values education. It has secular and religious primary schools. It has a middle school and a high school.
Even in sports Mevaseret Zion has a special story. The local soccer team once united with Ironi Abu Ghosh. It became the first Israeli team mixed with players from an Arab village and a Jewish town.
