Haven for soccer enthusiasts Metropolitan Oval stands as a testament to New York City’s diverse sporting history. This 4.2-acre complex in Maspeth Queens has been a soccer field since 1925.
Originally built by German and German-Hungarian immigrants Metropolitan Oval served as a European-style soccer field. It became a place for men and boys of all ages and ethnicities to play. Many U.S. national team players from the New York region honed their skills here as youths.
Imagine the echoes of past games. Picture the excitement of the 1976 exhibition match when Club Nacional de Football defeated Inter Giuliana 4-0.
However by the 1990s Metropolitan Oval had fallen into disrepair. Overuse had destroyed any grass and the field faced foreclosure due to unpaid taxes. The Metropolitan Oval Foundation was then formed to rescue this historic site.
Jim Vogt Chuck Jacob and Valerie Jacob led this non-profit organization. They raised enough money to save the field. Contributions from Nike and the U.S. Soccer Foundation helped construct a FieldTurf field and install new lights. In 2024 the field was resurfaced and the lights were retrofitted ensuring a top-notch playing experience.
Today Metropolitan Oval hosts multiple games each week from March to November. The Met Oval Academy competes against other academy teams in various leagues. The academy develops young soccer talent in New York City offering opportunities to children from all backgrounds. They receive specialized training team play and participate in camps and clinics.
