A story that begins on Christmas Day, 1842, when King Otto and Queen Amalia laid the first cornerstone. Imagine the scene: a crowd gathered, anticipation hanging in the air, as the foundation of this grand edifice was set. The construction, however, wasn’t without its challenges. The project, initially envisioned by architect Theophil Hansen, faced a pause due to lack of funds. It resumed in 1846, guided by the hands of Dimitrios Zezos, and later, Francois Boulanger and Panagis Kalkos. The Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, finally completed in 1862, stands as a symbol of perseverance. Interestingly, the cathedral’s very structure embodies a sense of continuity. Its walls, built with marble from 72 demolished churches, whisper tales of structures past. These stones, once part of other sacred spaces, now find new life in the heart of Athens. Within the cathedral’s embrace lie the tombs of two Orthodox saints: Saint Philothei, a beacon of hope for enslaved Greek women, and Patriarch Gregory V, a martyr of the Greek War of Independence.
