Dreaming of a swift journey from Swords to Dublin’s heart? That dream may soon become reality with MetroLink. MetroLink is poised to transform Dublin’s public transport. It is Ireland’s first metro railway.
Imagine zipping from Swords to the city center in about 25 minutes. MetroLink promises high-capacity transport. Trains will run every three minutes during peak times. This could increase to every 90 seconds by 2060. MetroLink is designed for efficiency.
This innovative project includes 16 new stations. They will stretch from Swords to Charlemont. Most of the 18.8km route will run underground. MetroLink will link major transport hubs. Dublin Airport, Irish Rail, DART, Dublin Bus and Luas services will be connected. This creates an integrated network.
Think about the convenience. MetroLink connects key destinations. Ballymun, the Mater Hospital and Dublin City University all benefit. Trinity College Dublin will also be more accessible. MetroLink aims to carry up to 53 million passengers annually. This is a significant upgrade for Dublin.

The project replaces the earlier Metro North proposal. The original idea emerged in 2001. The Dublin Transportation Office envisioned three metro lines. MetroLink is the first step toward this vision.
Initially, MetroLink faced delays. The project was first planned to begin operation in 2027. But it is now expected to begin construction in 2025. “All going well,” it could be operational by 2035.
The National Transport Authority announced revised proposals in 2018. These plans included integration with heavy rail. A new interchange station at Glasnevin will facilitate transfers. The tunnel construction method changed to minimize disruption.
There was initial opposition to the plan. Concerns arose about the potential closure of the Luas Green Line. Revised plans were published in 2019. MetroLink will be delivered in two phases. This reduces the Green Line closure period.
Test drilling for boreholes began in 2019. SNC-Lavalin was appointed as operations advisor. Despite pandemic-related delays, work resumed in Swords.
MetroLink is planned to operate a single line. Services will run from Charlemont to Swords. Trains will operate for 19 hours per day. Services will be every 3 minutes at peak times.
The metro is proposed to operate frequently. A journey to the city center will be quick. It will take 25 minutes from Swords and 20 minutes from Dublin Airport. A single-bore tunnel will save costs.
Initially, the project was estimated to cost €3 billion. As of July 2022, the estimated cost is €9.5 billion. Some estimates reach €23 billion.
The real scandal is the continuous delays. Building it quicker would have saved money.
