Metro North Community Gardens represents a classic New York story. It’s a tale of transformation. Vacant lots once blighted by neglect became thriving green spaces. These gardens rose from the ashes of urban decay. They began as a response to the problems of the 1960s and 70s. Arson and disinvestment left many lots empty and overrun with trash.

Initially. community groups fought for permission to build gardens. They sought to improve their neighborhoods. This effort gained momentum in 1978 with Operation GreenThumb. This city program leased vacant land to non-profits. They established community gardens. GreenThumb provided training tools soil seeds and bulbs. By the 1990s over 1000 lots covered 125 acres. 700 community groups benefited. 2000 fruit trees were planted.

The gardens weren’t without conflict. The city’s need for low-income housing created tension. Gardens faced uprooting. One famous battle involved Adam Purple and his Garden of Eden. The city wanted to build housing there. A court battle ensued. Ultimately the garden was bulldozed.

During the 1980s and 90s the fight over land escalated. Mayor Giuliani even wanted to auction off some gardens. However Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project stepped in. They bought dozens of plots. This saved all 112 gardens slated for sale.
