Peeking out from behind Pershing Square, Metro 417 Apartments stands as a testament to Los Angeles’ vibrant past and present. This isn’t just another apartment building. It’s a meticulously restored piece of history reborn for modern living.

Originally known as the Subway Terminal Building, Metro 417 first opened its doors in 1926. Imagine the Los Angeles basin then. Over 1,000 miles of Pacific Electric interurban railway lines crisscrossed the region. The Subway Terminal Building served as the gateway to the San Fernando Valley and the Westside. Over 65,000 commuters and shoppers passed through its concourse daily.

Designed by architects Schultze and Weaver, Metro 417 exemplifies the Beaux Arts style. Look closely. Notice the Italian Renaissance ornamentation. The monumental entrance arches command attention. The attic detailing is exquisite. The rusticated walls are made of large cut-stone blocks.

Originally, there were twin entrances. One led to the grand concourse for the subway. The other opened into the office tower’s lobby. While the office lobby retains its elegant ornamentation, the subway’s grand concourse was altered in the 1950s. The subway tunnel has been closed to trains and the public for many years.

Take a step inside the magnificent lobby of Metro 417. Soaring coffered ceilings rise above you. Italian marble floors gleam under the light. Mosaic tile shimmers. Hand-crafted woodwork whispers tales of a grander era. Architectural details tell a story of timeless elegance.

After a five-year, $60 million rehabilitation, the building reopened in 2005. Metro 417 transformed into stylish, loft-style apartments. The building boasts 277 apartment units.

Consider the building’s size. Metro 417 spans 518,000 square feet and rises 12 stories high.
