Antananarivo is a city of hills. It sits 1280 meters above sea level. It is the capital and largest city of Madagascar. The city has been the country’s largest population center since the 18th century.

Antananarivo has a rich history. It was founded around 1610 or 1625. King Andrianjaka chose it as his capital. He expelled the Vazimba people. He built a fortified royal dwelling. It expanded into royal palaces.

The city’s population grew. By 1810, it had over 80000 inhabitants. King Radama I opened the city to European settlers. Missionaries arrived. They opened the first public schools.

Queen Ranavalona I improved the city’s infrastructure. In 1867, Queen Ranavalona II allowed stone and brick construction. Stone churches were built. They commemorated Malagasy Christian martyrs.

The French military invaded in 1894. They retained Antananarivo as the capital. They transcribed its name as Tananarive. They introduced sewer systems and electricity.

After independence in 1960, growth increased. By the 21st century, there were more than 5000 church buildings in the city.

Today, Antananarivo faces challenges. These include overcrowding, waste management, and pollution. The Commune Urbaine d’Antananarivo manages the city.
