Did the walls of the Methodist Church of Ghana in Kumasi whisper secrets of Ashanti royalty? Let’s step back to 1839. Reverend Thomas Birch Freeman, a Wesleyan Methodist missionary, arrived in Kumasi with a mission to spread Christianity. His journey wasn’t easy. He faced delays and suspicion about his intentions. Finally, on April 1st, 1839, King Kwaku Duah granted him entry. Freeman preached in the streets and even held services in the King’s palace. This marked the beginning of Methodism in Kumasi and the birth of what is now the Methodist Church of Ghana in Kumasi Diocese. Upon Freeman’s return to Kumasi in 1841, he bore gifts for the King: a carriage, furniture, dinnerware, and a portrait of Queen Victoria. By 1842, the King granted land to the mission in Krobo Odumase. This land still houses Methodist Church properties, including the Nana Kwaku Duah I Methodist House, the Diocesan Headquarters. This shows the early connection between the church and Ashanti royalty. The Methodist Church of Ghana gained autonomy in 1961, which established the Kumasi District. Later, in 1999, it became the Kumasi Diocese. Today, the Methodist Church of Ghana in Kumasi Diocese stands as a testament to its rich history, its influence extending beyond religion into education and social development. From its royal beginnings to its vibrant present, the Methodist Church of Ghana in Kumasi continues to shape the community.
