Doesn’t the name Metairie Ridge Presbyterian Church evoke a sense of history and community? This church began as a Sunday school in 1913. It met in a home on Metairie Road near Stella Street. The school quickly outgrew that space. Within six months, it moved to a two-room wooden school building. This building was on the site of the present Metairie Middle School.
In 1919, land was purchased at Codifer Boulevard and Phosphor Avenue. The Presbytery of New Orleans approved the official organization of Metairie Ridge Presbyterian Church in 1920. There were 51 charter members. Construction began on a church building in 1922. The building was dedicated in 1924.
Metairie Ridge Presbyterian Church was the only Presbyterian Church in the area. It grew steadily. A vested choir was established in 1934 to lead worship. In the early 1950s, an associate pastor was called. An education building was built in 1951. By 1954, membership had grown. A second service was added.
The Hugo fellowship hall was added in the late 1950s. It accommodated large congregational gatherings. A larger sanctuary was needed. The cornerstone of the present building was laid in March 1957. The first service was held there in June of that year. A new education wing was needed. The Bracey building was dedicated in 1965.
Today, Metairie Ridge Presbyterian Church continues to thrive. It is known for its commitment to children and families. The church has a Child Development Center, Day Care, and Vacation Bible School.
The current pastor is Reverend David Watson. He began serving on August 1st, 2018. Before joining Metairie Ridge Presbyterian Church, David worked for Baptist Community Ministries. He served as Chaplain for the New Orleans Police Department. David is married to Reverend Sarah Chancellor-Watson. She serves at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church in New Orleans. They have a son, Chance. He attends Metairie Ridge Daycare. They also have a dog, Buster. He often helps with Children’s Chapel.
Metairie Ridge Presbyterian Church is a member of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. It is also a member of the Presbytery of South Louisiana. Through worship, prayer, fellowship, and mission, the church grows in faith. This growth happens individually and as a community.
You are welcome to join Metairie Ridge Presbyterian Church for Adult Sunday School at 9:00 AM. Worship Service starts at 10:30 AM. The Church Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The church seeks to share God’s love with its neighbors. It welcomes everyone to explore what it means to follow Jesus Christ.
