Built in 1927 Messiah Swedish Lutheran Church stands proudly. It’s a testament to the unwavering faith of a community. This unassuming brick building on Sherman Avenue in Inwood held countless stories. It wasn’t always a church. It began as a humble school and chapel.

The Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church congregation formed in 1916. They met in various locations before settling on Sherman Avenue. Architect George W Conable designed their new home. It cost $40000 a considerable sum in 1927. Pastor Frederick P Wilhelm led the congregation during this pivotal period. He lived just a short distance away at 609 West 204th Street. The church hosted many community events. Its doors opened for celebrations and supplications.

In 1945 Messiah merged with St Matthew’s Lutheran Church. St Matthew’s members joined Messiah’s building. However this union was short-lived. In 1957 both congregations moved to a new church at 202 Sherman Avenue. The original Messiah building was then sold. The Ladies Aid Society founded in 1916 played a significant role. They supported the church’s growth and activities. The Young People’s Society also contributed to the church’s vibrant atmosphere.

The church’s journey reflects the changing landscape of Inwood. It shows the enduring power of faith and community. It highlights the adaptability of a congregation. The building itself may be gone but its legacy remains. It lives on in the memories of those who worshipped there. Messiah Swedish Lutheran Church’s story is a powerful one. It’s a tale of faith resilience and community. It’s a story worth remembering.
