Messiah Lutheran Church

Did you ever wonder what brings a group of disparate individuals together? At Messiah Lutheran Church on Skidaway Island, the answer is beautifully woven into the very fabric of the building. Messiah Lutheran Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the power of community and the unifying force of faith. In 1991, a small group of families, just forty-eight people representing twenty-six families, gathered with a shared dream. They envisioned a new Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) mission on Skidaway Island. Their vision took root, and by 1993, Messiah Lutheran Church held its first official service. The journey wasn’t always easy. The congregation worshipped in a variety of locations, from the Landings Association building to the Skidaway Island State Park group shelter. This perseverance culminated in a joyous Easter Sunday in 1999. The congregation finally gathered in their newly built sanctuary, a symbol of their dedication and resilience. Look up at the magnificent chancel cross. It tells a story of unity within diversity. Crafted from many small pieces of hardwood, each piece takes the stain differently, creating a vibrant tapestry of colors. This cross represents the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the Messiah Lutheran Church members, all united in their faith. The church also houses another treasure, a Pramberger grand piano. This wasn’t just any piano. It was a gift from Joseph J. Pramberger, a former member and a world-renowned piano design engineer. He personally selected this piano, a 7’6″ grand finished in African pommele wood, one of only twenty ever made. He signed the soundboard in 2003, dedicating it “To the Glory of God.” Messiah Lutheran Church embraces the core beliefs of the ELCA. They believe in the Triune God, the transformative power of Jesus Christ, and the active presence of God’s Spirit in the world. Their worship services, Bible studies, and community outreach programs all reflect this deep faith. They also believe in the importance of tithing, not just as a financial contribution, but as an act of gratitude and a way to support the church’s mission and outreach efforts.
