Messiah Lutheran Church

In 1942, a vision took root. Reverend Lawrence Rudolph began canvassing the Downey area, hoping to establish a new Lutheran mission. This marked the humble beginnings of Messiah Lutheran Church. Messiah Lutheran Church started with a small group of 35 people worshipping in a storefront chapel on East 3rd Street. Downey’s population was only around 1,400 at the time. Through preaching, teaching, and active community outreach, the congregation grew steadily. In 1945, a significant step was taken. Messiah Lutheran Church purchased the land that would become its permanent home. Interestingly, the property was once part of a sprawling orange grove. This transition symbolized a shift from one kind of fruitfulness to another, mirroring the transformation of Jesus’ disciples. The following years were a whirlwind of activity for Messiah Lutheran Church. The women of the church formed a charter of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League in 1945. Construction of the first church building began in 1947. Post-World War II brought a population boom to Downey, and Messiah Lutheran Church flourished alongside it. By 1953, the church’s Sunday school attendance reached 200, packing the sanctuary to capacity. An addition was finally completed in 1954 to accommodate the growing congregation. Messiah Lutheran Church continued to evolve under the leadership of various pastors. Reverend John Hohengarten served from 1947 until 1966. He then transitioned to become a hospital chaplain. Reverend C. Roger Meyer and Reverend Al Young followed, each contributing to the church’s growth. Later, Pastor Tom Windsor, who served from 1979 to 1984, designed the beautiful leaded glass windows that adorn the sanctuary today. These windows, installed in 2005, depict the three means of grace: baptism, holy communion, and God’s word. They serve as a visual representation of the Holy Spirit’s presence. Pastor Norm Stoppenhagen led Messiah Lutheran Church for over two decades, from 1985 to 2006. During his tenure, the church recognized the growing Spanish-speaking community and began offering services and ministries in Spanish in 1995. More recently, the sanctuary underwent a major renovation in 2015, bringing it closer to its present form. Messiah Lutheran Church has a rich history of service, growth, and adaptation. From its humble beginnings in a storefront chapel, it has blossomed into a vibrant community of faith, impacting countless lives over the decades.
